As Free Agency has began to slow down it is the perfect time to take a look at the team needs for each team as we get closer to the 2019 NFL Draft. Listed below are the Kansas City Chiefs Team Needs as they head into the 2019 NFL Draft listed in order of importance.
Kansas City Chiefs Team Needs
Edge
The Chiefs will be without three of their top four pass rushers next season as Justin Houston, Allen Bailey and Dee Ford have all departed. Moving to a more attacking scheme under coordinator Steve Spagnulo will allow recent draft picks Breeland Speaks and Tanoh Kpassagnon to try to live up their draft hype. Adding another edge to play the Leo position and competition for the SAM linebacker role will both be high on the front offices wish list.
Cornerback
The addition of Bashaun Breeland adds another veteran presence on a prove-it deal to run with Kendall Fuller and late season breakout player Charvarius Ward to form an improving secondary. Spagnulo’s penchant to play mainly three cornerback sets lends the team to continue building by adding an early draft pick in the mold of Deandre Baker, Rock Ya Sin or Joejuan Williams.
Wide receiver
The chiefs lost third receiver Chris Conley to free agency and found out how much having an adequate second receiver opened up the offense when Sammy Watkins was healthy. With a major cap hit going into 2020, finding an Watkins replacement this offseason will keep the offense humming for the foreseeable future. The Chiefs should be looking to grab a player like Deebo Samuel or Riley Ridley on day two.
Safety
Hearing the Chiefs were on the verge of adding Earl Thomas to recent signing Tyrann Mathieu, we can use reasonable thought to see that the team looks to use the latter as a box safety. This leaves a hole after the release of Eric Berry at the free safety position. Armani Watts will be coming back from injury, but adding a player like Nasir Adderley or Juan Thornhill on day two will shore up what has been a problem area for the Chiefs.
Tight end
The Chiefs are finally moving on from Demetrius Harris and his drops, a major joy to many fans. With Travis Kelce coming back form minor offseason ankle surgery and while he is still very productive he would benefit from adding a young tight end who excels in run blocking and is able to help in the passing game. A name to keep an eye on is Jace Sternberger on day three.
