5 Takeaways from the First Two Days of Combine Weigh Ins

March 3, 2017

Two days of the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine are in the wraps where we’ve seen weigh ins from the all of the offensive prospects and even some of the initial bench presses. Here are five things that have stood out.

1. Mitch Trubisky’s height

Heading into the Combine there was speculation that Trubisky was 6’1 instead of his 6’3 listed height at North Carolina which is could scare some teams off. Instead Trubisky measured in at 6’2 which should keep him above the threshold that most teams have for the position.

2. Christian McCaffery’s Disappointing Bench Press

While the bench press doesn’t translate to the field it does show whether the prospect is hitting the weight room and if they have functional strength. I’m not questioning McCaffrey’s strength or work ethic, but numbers like this could raise some questions with NFL teams that look closely at that.

3. JuJu Smith-Schuster is Long

While Smith-Schuster only measured at 6’1 he possesses long arms at 32 7/8″ arms and 10 1/2″ hands. His height may be a little shorter than some expected but along with those long arms and big hands and they should be able to make up for it.

4. David Njoku is a Physical Freak

We’ve heard about how big of a physical freak Njoku is displaying great athleticism on the football field and is his former track stardom. But at the weigh ins it makes all his athletic feats even more impressive 6’4 and 246lbs with 10″ hands and 35 1/4″ long arms. When you add those measurements along with expected leaping ability and Njoku is going to be a very early pick.

5. Antonio Garcia’s Improvement from Senior Bowl

After weighing in at 293 lbs at the Senior Bowl Garcia was able to pack on nine pounds which is good because offensive tackles under 300lbs can turn off NFL teams. Then when you add in that Garcia was able to put up 24 reps it shows he can have the strength to do well playing on the outside.
