Andrew Thomas | Georgia’s Next 1st Round Tackle

Andrew Thomas NFL Draft

Coming out of Atlanta Thomas was as a 6’5 285lb 4 Star high school recruit Andrew Thomas was highly coveted choosing the home state Bulldogs over scholarship offers from the SEC’s elite along with schools like Michigan, Notre Dame and Clemson. Thomas wasted little time making an impact with Georgia as he started at right tackle as a true freshman before switching over to the left side when Isaiah Wynn left for the NFL. Now that Andrew Thomas is NFL Draft eligible he’s looking to follow Wynn’s footsteps a second time and be the Bulldogs next first round tackle.

What Andrew Thomas Does Well

When watching Andrew Thomas play you can really see his experience show as Thomas shows good awareness to pick up defenders games and even pick up on the pass rushers moves and put himself in position to counter. What makes Thomas so talented is not only does he have the awareness but he has the physical traits to act on what he is seeing. Thomas shows the ability to make quick lateral movements to stay in front of defenders and even mirror their movements while also showing balance to always be in a position to redirect and not get caught leaning or lunging that would leave him vulnerable to counter moves.

Concerns About Andrew Thomas

While Thomas does show he has the lateral agility to stick with pass rushers he can struggle at times with more speed rushers who are able to make quick moves to the outside while Thomas can struggle to get enough depth to consistently cut off the edge. Now he has the length to push defenders past the pocket and has even shown some violent shoves to knock defenders off balance when trying to bend the edge he could look to clean that up as he enters the draft. Thomas also could stand to improve his hand usage as those hands tend to get outside and where he struggles with hand strength to lock down the defender who can slip off his blocks.

NFL Draft Outlook

For an offensive lineman one of the best things that can be said about them is that you didn’t even notice them throughout the game. That can be the case for Andrew Thomas as he is a solid left tackle with the mental and physical traits to slow down the opponents pass rush. He isn’t going to be flashy but instead get the work done. As Thomas enters his third year as the starter he has some areas to improve on and if he can do that to go along with his physical traits he has a shot to go in the first round. At this point I don’t see a top 10 prospect but he’ll be a solid starter in the league for years to come. And in today’s NFL, those don’t come around all the time.
