  • Concerns of Maturity or having too much competitiveness has lead him to questionable antics
  • Arm strength isn’t great which means his accuracy can go down on longer throws or in adverse conditions
  • Doesn’t throw with the best anticipation often having to see the receiver come open first
  • Can struggle at times to lock onto a receiver or just make a throw without looking because of the play call
  • Lower body mechanics don’t always match up to the upper body leading to some accuracy issues

For the past three years Baker Mayfield has been a force to be reckon with as he’s lead the Sooners to two College Football Playoff appearances while also winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy. Mayfield wins both in the pocket and outside showing the ability to make accurate throws allowing his receivers to keep running and get more yards after the catch. His accuracy will dip the further he throws and a big part of that is his arm strength. When he tries to drive the ball he often can sail the ball which forces him to have to use more touch. Mayfield has shown the ability to throw with touch and drop the ball over defenders, but having to much air under it can result in under thrown balls or having the ball hang up in the air. The issue can be more evident in adverse weather conditions since he can struggle to cut through the wind.

Red Flags

The big knock on Mayfield may have with NFL teams is his antics. Whether it’s the alcohol arrest and running from the cops, planting the flag at Ohio State, crotch grab at Kansas among others, teams have to be sure they can trust him to be the face of their franchise. Too often we see the Johnny Manziel comparisons and while Mayfield and Manziel have a similar playing style and some behavior red flags, the red flags are not even close to the same. Mayfield may have some maturity issues but they don’t come close to the alcohol and legal issues that Manziel showed.

Mayfield has thrived with a huge chip on his shoulder, but if he can reign in some of his competitiveness and improve on some of his mechanical issues he has the chance to be a top 15 quarterback in the league. His starting experience will also increase his chance of seeing the field during his rookie year.
