Jalen Hurts NFL Draft

Can Jalen Hurts Make it Three in a Row?

June 5, 2019

No school had ever had back to back quarterbacks go number one overall until the Sooners did it with Baker Mayfield and then Kyler Murray. And Oklahoma finds themselves in an unique spot as they landed former National Championship quarterback Jalen Hurts as a graduate transfer. Which raises the question, can Jalen Hurts be the third straight Oklahoma quarterback to go number one overall in the NFL Draft?

Why Jalen Hurts Could Go Number One

While both Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray had a ton of natural talent they still took the next step while at Oklahoma and a lot of that can be attributed to Lincoln Riley. Hurts is a natural athlete who can move well and has shown the ability to make throws on the run. Being a multi year starter in a pro style scheme Hurts has the ability to read defenses and go through progressions.

Why Jalen Hurts Won’t Go Number One

You don’t win a National Title without having talent but far too often do you see Hurts missing open receivers and when he does it’s already after they have gotten open. Hurts does have the ability to drive the ball downfield but he struggles with ball placement and touch often under throwing receivers and forcing them to have to make contested catches or limit their run after the catch ability.

Jalen Hurts NFL Draft Projection

While is fun to imagine that the Sooners will have three straight quarterbacks go number one overall, but it’s highly unlikely that it actually happens. Hurts weaknesses were minimized by Lane Kiffin at Alabama and when he didn’t have a good play caller he struggled even with elite weapons. Hurts will have success at Oklahoma but it’s because Lincoln Riley is a good offensive mind and will adapt the defense around Hurts’ legs. Jalen Hurts may get drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft but if he wants to have a long NFL career he may be best served moving to running back and following in the footsteps of former Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson who had a good run with Seattle as a running back.
