CJ Henderson NFL Draft

CJ Henderson | NFL Draft’s Premiere Cornerback

June 25, 2019

With over two dozen scholarship offers, including most of the SEC, Henderson chose the Florida Gators and is looking to be the next in a long line of Gator defensive backs to be drafted in the first round. In this CJ Henderson Summer NFL Draft Preview we’ll take a look at what Henderson does well, what concerns we have and what his NFL Draft potential could be.

What CJ Henderson Does Well

In coverage CJ Henderson is able to blanket receivers using fluid movement skills along with speed and burst. Whether it is out of off or press coverage Henderson is able to be patient and use his quick feet to keep him in position to react to the receivers cuts and then use his burst to move with the receiver. Once the ball is in the air Henderson is able to accelerate and then get his hand into the catch point or onto the ball to disrupt the pass and force incompletions. Speed is also important for the cornerback position and Henderson has the speed that allows him to stay on top of fast receivers but also the ability to turn and run with them.

Concerns about CJ Henderson

While his movement skills and speed are top notch and ball skills are good, there are some concerns that could cause some teams to pass on him early. Listed at 6’1 and 191lbs those are good numbers for a cornerback, but on tape it appears that Henderson is smaller than his listed size.

There are also concerns about Henderson when it comes to the run game. And while I care more about my cornerbacks covering receivers, they have to hold their own in the run game. At times Henderson seems disinterested in stopping the run and while he is scrappy he can get pushed around by bigger receivers.

NFL Draft Outlook

With his movement and ball skills along with his listed height, CJ Henderson has the makings a of a shut down cornerback. His ability to play both outside and in the slot can allow teams to either keep him on one side or even move him around to shadow a specific receiver. Henderson can play both off or press man coverage which should only increase his worth with NFL teams. When CJ Henderson enters the NFL Draft (JR) he has the potential to go in the top of the first round to a team looking for a lock down corner.
