Damien Harris the Next Alabama Highly Drafted RB?

June 9, 2018

Since Nick Saban has taken over in 2007 the Crimson Tide have had 9 running backs drafted with 5 of them drafted within the first two rounds. It’s safe to say that Nick Saban’s offenses have been churning out highly regarded running back prospects. Some of those guys have busted out, but others have gone on to be key pieces for their NFL teams. Now that Bo Scarbrough is gone the next guy to step up is Damien Harris and he’ll have his shot to be Alabama’s next highly drafted running back.

Is Damien Harris the Next Alabama Highly Drafted RB?

At 5’11 216lbs Damien Harris has average size for the position but he makes his hay using his speed to accelerate through holes to get into the defensive backfield. Even though Harris isn’t a big bruising back like his former teammate Bo Scarbrough he thrives running up the middle on inside zone plays getting upfield as fast as he can. When Harris struggles it’s when he is asked to run more lateral routes and his lack of quickness can be exposed.

In his senior season it will be interesting to see if Harris is more involved in the receiving game as he’s only has 30 catches through three years and he’s averaging less than a catch per game. If Harris wants to be a higher pick with his current skill set he’ll need to be a part of the pass game.

Harris has plenty of potential with explosive north and south speed, but in his final year at Alabama he’ll need to show that he’s worked on some of his holes in his game. But if TJ Yeldon can be drafted in the high second round, why can’t Harris?
