Is Devin Bush Perfect LB for the New NFL?

June 5, 2018

With the NFL continuing to go through their pass happy offense style NFL defenses are continuing to evolve which raises the question of whether linebackers like Devin Bush are perfect for this new age NFL.

What does Devin Bush have to offer?

While Devin Bush may look like a safety (5’11 222lbs) playing linebacker, don’t let his size fool you as he’s a tough linebacker that isn’t afraid to stick his nose in the run game. Bush may not be a big hitter and can get engulfed at times he shows the ability to play in space and fly to the ball. Bush is also successful attacking and coming forward using his quickness and change of direction ability to knife through the offensive line.

Bush is at his best when playing in space and was used as a match up weapon against tight ends and some receivers. Flexed out over the slot Bush uses that same quickness and fluidity to play underneath coverage against receivers while having the speed to run with tight ends. Not to mention Bush is a force on designed blitzes often looping off the back of defensive tackles stunting.

Who Does Devin Bush Compare To?

We’ve seen a slew of smaller linebackers like Devin Bush drafted in the first round the last several years. Guys like Deone Buccanon to the Cardinals, Shaq Thompson to the Panthers and Darron Lee to the Buckeyes are all similar players to Bush. However what makes Bush different than all three is he has experience playing as a stacked linebacker in college. Both Buccannon and Thompson played safety while Lee was a linebacker but he spent most of his time as a pseudo safety. Bush’s ability to play close to the line of scrimmage and experience taking on blocks on a regular basis may allow him to make an instant impact and not suffer the same early struggles that Lee is working his way through.
