Jake Fromm NFL Draft

Jake Fromm NFL Draft Potential | Elite or Not

June 1, 2019

A herald 5 Star recruit Jake Fromm was the third rated quarterback coming out of high school and was the first quarterback for Kirby Smart once he came to Georgia. Fromm wasn’t expected to play right away as the Bulldogs had Jacob Eason as another highly recruited player who started the year before as a true freshman. But a late hit and a knee strain during the first game of the 2017 season forced Fromm into the starting role. Fromm seized his opportunity leading the Bulldogs to a near National Championship win and hasn’t looked back since. But as Jake Fromm becomes draft eligible his name has been in the forefront of NFL Draft chatter. Here we take a look at Jake Fromm’s NFL potential.

What Jake Fromm Does Well

It’s clear from watching the tape that Fromm understands the mental part of the game. He’s able to sit in the pocket and go through his reads to find the open receiver and makes good decisions not putting the ball in bad situations or even forcing the ball. Fromm doesn’t have a strong arm but does have the ability to deliver the ball to the receivers showing some touch.

Concerns about Jake Fromm

While Fromm can make some accurate throws he is far too inconstant and often forces his receivers to have to adjust. A big part of this is that Fromm doesn’t always throw with the best lower body mechanics. Whether it’s not getting his feet set correctly or having too wide of a base it causes his throws to sail or even fall short. Fromm does shows some ability to throw with anticipation to lead his receivers he hasn’t shown much to make throws before the receivers make their cuts.

Sometimes when a quarterback is leading a team that wins at a high level it can allow us to gloss over some of the deficiencies that he has. That is true here with Fromm as he has been routinely mocked in the top 10 by several early 2020 Mock Drafts. However when you watch his tape his struggles with inconsistency has been masked by having some good weapons around him.

Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks coined the phrase “Trucks and Trailers” when it comes to quarterbacks. To me Jake Fromm is a trailer who is going to need weapons around him that he can distribute the ball rather making plays with his arm. Fromm reminds me a lot of Andy Dalton in that he has the potential to be a quality NFL starter, but just needs a good supporting cast to be built around him.
