Kansas City Chiefs 2017 Draft Review

1st/10 Patrick Mahomes, QB

Ht.: 6-2 Wt.: 225 School: Texas Tech

Wanting to find the future franchise quarterback the Chiefs moved up seventeen spots in a trade with Buffalo. Mahomes has elite arm talent but needs time to learn an NFL system and fix some of the poor mechanics and fundamentals he displayed in Texas Tech’s “Air Raid. Landing in Kansas City is a great situation for Mahomes as he won’t be forced into a starting role early and is able to learn under Andy Reid.

2nd/59 Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE

Ht.: 6-7 Wt.: 289 School: Villanova

Because of his combination of size and athletic ability Kpassagnon is an intriguing prospect. Playing on the edge Kpassanon had 11 sacks despite seeing regular double teams. Still new to the game and playing in the FCS Kpassagnon is going to need some time to develop as he could stand to add weight to his frame. With an establish defense he can play a limited role while he gets his feet wet before increasing his role in 2018.

3rd/86 Kareem Hunt, RB

Ht.: 5-11 Wt.: 216 School: Toledo

Since stepping foot on Toledo’s campus all Kareem Hunt has done is produce. Through quick lateral cuts, balance and vision Hunt rushed for 4,945 yards and 44 touchdowns during his career. Add in his ability to catch the ball in the passing game and Hunt could remind Andy Reid of former Eagle Brian Westbrook. Spencer Ware will open as the starter, but the door is open for Hunt to take control.

4th/139 Jehu Chesson, WR

Ht.: 6-3 Wt.: 204 School: Michigan

In Andy Reid’s offense he values receivers who can run good routes running and creating separation. For his size Chesson is more of a run and catch receiver who uses explosive accelerating out of his cuts to create separation. Needing help on the outside, Chesson will have an opportunity to contend for a starting role as a rookie.

5th/183 Ukeme Eligwe, LB

Ht.: 6-2 Wt.: 234 School: Georgia Southern

A former Top 50 High School prospect Eligwe started his career at Florida State before being dismissed for a rule violation. Looking the part Eligwe is a downhill thumper who can maneuver through traffic well. If he can stay focus he has what it takes to be a future starter at inside linebacker.

6th/218 Leon McQuay III, S

Ht.: 6-1 Wt.: 197 School: Southern California

A solid athlete but a lack of top end speed really limits McQuay at the safety position. McQuay benefits from the Chiefs running several six defensive back packages where he could be used as an underneath defender reacting to the ball. McQuay should be able to contribute to special teams which will likely allow him to hold a roster spot.

Best Pick

Hunt (third round)

Upside Pick

Kpassagnon (second round)

Overall Thoughts

Having a deep talented team allows you to be more aggressive trading and finding developmental pieces. Both Mahomes and Kpassagnon are not expect to play much as rookies and instead sit back and develop while Hunt and Chesson have the best chance to contribute right away. This draft was about the future.
