Is Kellen Mond a 1st Round Quarterback?

Kellen Mond NFL Draft

Even before Kellen Mond got to Texas A&M he was already priming himself for success as he transferred to the IMG Academy for his senior year in route to him becoming the #1 Dual Threat quarterback in the 2017 recruiting class. That experience and getting to start as a true freshman has been helping Kellen Mond build up his resume as he becomes NFL Draft eligible. Here we will take a look at whether Mond has what it takes to be a first round pick.

Why Kellen Mond Could Go in Round 1?

Entering his third year as a starter in the SEC Mond has not only see NFL level defensive players week in and week out but he is currently playing in a complex scheme that will make it easier for him. In Jimb Fisher’s offense Kellen Mond is asked to see the whole field but make various different reads at the line of scrimmage and when dropping back. In today’s college football that doesn’t happen very often. Mond started to see the field much better as the 2018 season wore on and that could only help to build his confidence and play making ability.

As a thrower Mond can make accurate throws both in the pocket and on the run with enough arm strength that allows him to drive the ball into tight spots. Mond is also good moving within the pocket as he’s able to sense pressure which allows him to climb up in the pocket or move to the side. As far as touch and anticipation Mond shows that he’s willing to drop the ball into his receivers and make throws as or before the receivers make their breaks.

Why Kellen Mond Won’t Go in Round 1?

While Kellen Mond has a lot going on for him he is still a work in progress. Accuracy tends to be inconsistent at best for Mond as he will over throw receivers on both short and long passes and even be off target making his receivers have to adjust either up or behind them to make catches. Part of this is his lower body mechanics don’t always match up with his upper body which will lead to the ball sailing at time. Mond is also a play maker by nature and will try to make something out of nothing which leads to him trying to force the ball or even trying to throw while he’s being sacked leading to some interceptions.

Kellen Mond Projection

In our search we are always looking for that quarterback that not a lot of people are talking about as a potential first round quarterback and finding them before they break out. Kellen Mond has a lot of physical traits and he’s not only playing for a coach in Jimbo Fisher who has worked with several quarterbacks that have been drafted in the first round. It will be interesting to see how Mond develops over his junior year as he has a lot of the physical traits that NFL teams want these days. At this point he’s not close to being a first round pick, but if he’s able to take a big jump mentally over his junior season he could work his way into Day 2 discussion.
