Lions sign wide receiver Tyrell Williams

Tyrell Williams Lions

The Detroit Lions signed former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Tyrell Williams to a contract, the team announced Tuesday.

The addition of Williams is noteworthy because of the need Detroit has at wide receiver, especially with the potential losses of Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones in free agency.

The Lions own the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and wide receiver has been a popular pick for Detroit in mock drafts. Whether it’s Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith, or Ja’Marr Chase, the projected void at wideout has the position at or near the top of the team’s needs list.

The addition of Williams won’t completely change that, but he is an accomplished pro who’s had some success with the Los Angeles Chargers and Raiders as a downfield weapon. He totaled 69 catches for 1,059 yards and seven touchdowns back in 2016 but injuries derailed his ability to get on track with the Raiders over the last two seasons.

He should step into a significant role with the new-look Lions passing attack, led by QB Jared Goff.
