Micheal Clemons Scouting Report
Background:
6’5, 270 (EST) … 2022 Senior Bowl invite … finished 2021 season with 32 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and seven sacks; totaled 93 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks in four seasons at TAMU … a three-star recruit by most outlets … played JUCO after high school and was rated the third-best JUCO defensive end prospect.
Physical/Athletic profile:
Physically, Micheal Clemons looks the part; possesses top-tier length and body composition; a muscular guy who passes the eye-ball test with flying colors … Athletically, Clemons is an average mover whose length hurts his ability to get out of his stance quickly; his effectiveness at the snap runs hot and cold because of his slow get-off … he’s a coordinated guy with hands and feet that work in concert, he just isn’t an overly twitchy player.
Against the pass:
As a pass-rusher, Clemons presents an appealing set of traits; he has good upper-body strength and strong hands — when he strikes first, he has no problem keeping his chest plate clean and working into the backfield … Micheal Clemons relies on his power too much as a bull rusher and needs more nuance when attacking the quarterback; his hand usage and coordination suggests he has the upside to develop into a top-shelf edge rusher if he takes to coaching on the next level.
Against the run:
Against the run, Micheal Clemons has enough of an anchor to set the edge … he lacks the kind of burst needed to be a consistent player in pursuit, but his length and ability to hold his ground suggest he’ll be an asset in plays run at him.
Overall:
Overall, Micheal Clemons profiles as a 3-4 defensive end with a very high ceiling … he’s a great example of a height-weight-speed prospect who will be viewed as an exceptional coaching project on the next level … if he lands in the right system with a schooled position coach, Clemons’ upside is massive … I expect he’ll be a player who consistently rises throughout draft season and could be one of the better defensive players to come out of this draft two or three years from now.
