Mohamed Barry NFL Draft Summer Preview

Mohamed Barry NFL Draft

Coming from Georgia Mohamed Barry wasn’t a highly recruited 3 Star Prospect but did select Nebraska over the likes of Miami, Wisconsin, Kansas State and North Carolina State. It took a couple of years for Barry to find his mark but after getting to finally start during his junior year he emerged as a tackling machine with 112 total tackles along with 10 tackles for loss. Now entering his senior season Barry has been touted as a strong leader and is looking to build off of his 2018. In our NFL Draft Summer Preview we’ll take a look at Mohamed Barry and his traits to see how he can translate to the NFL.

What Barry Does Well

At his best Mohamed Barry is attacking the ball utilizing his physicality and burst to make plays. A big part of why Barry was able to make 112 tackles as a junior is because he’s able to quickly diagnose where the ball is going and then use his physical skills to get him to the ball. Whether it’s seeing where the ball carrier is going or even the little things like pulling lineman or cut back lanes he’s able to make that read quickly. From there Barry uses good burst to really fly to his gap or to the ball to get there quickly to make a play on the ball carrier. Combined with that burst, power and strong motor Barry always finds himself around the ball and that is what you want out of your linebackers.

Concerns

Showing good instincts and burst can mask some of Barry’s deficiencies as he lacks good long speed to be able to consistently go sideline to sideline to make plays. In coverage Barry can plays some man to man coverage where he is able to turn and run with tight ends and even running backs but if he has to make sudden changes of direction he will struggle due to being a bit stiff. Even in zone coverage Barry can flow and get solid depth but when he has to react he is a bit slow.

Mohamed Barry NFL Draft Outlook

Utilizing his instincts and quickness Mohamed Barry can be a good run defender but with some concerns with his ability to cover in the passing game causes doubt that he can be more than just a role player. If Barry can show more comfort in coverage and show he can cover better he has a shot to be a day two pick but at this point he looks like an early Day 3 pick who fills a good run stuffing role who will also be a core special teams player.
