The Jets have had an interesting offseason that saw them release Muhammad Wilkerson but also bring in nine free agents including a new number one cornerback in Trumaine Johnson. With the 2018 NFL Draft just around the corner here is a look at the New York Jets Team Needs heading into the NFL Draft.
New York Jets Team Needs
Quarterback
With an abundance of cap room, the Jets were firmly in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes hoping to sign the franchise quarterback but instead had to settle for Teddy Bridgewater and resigning Josh McNown. While Bridgewater is still young the Jets traded up to the third pick with the possibility of drafting a quarterback there.
Offensive Tackle
While Kelvin Beachum has played admirably at left tackle the Jets have struggled to find any success at right tackle seeing both Brandon Shell and Brent Qvale struggle. A veteran would be good, but using a day two pick on someone with left tackle potential would be ideal.
Running Back
New York has been active at running back as Matt Forte has retired and Isaiah Crowell was signed to provide a between the tackle runner. Looking to improve their 19th rated rushing attack the Jets will look to draft another running back to go with Crowell and their best back Bilal Powell.
Center
After Nick Mangold was released the Jets felt comfortable having Wesley Johnson step into a starting role but he struggled in 2017 finishing as the 35th rated center according to Pro Football Focus. Former Redskin Spencer Long was signed but it may be viewed more of a depth move.
Defensive End
While defensive line was always a strength with Pro Bowl caliber defensive tackles, the Jets struggled to generate pressure averaging only 1.75 sacks per game in 2017. Finding an athletic pass rusher to come off the edge would do wonders for this defense and complement those talented interior pass rushers.
Cornerback
For Todd Bowles scheme to work he needs an elite cover corner and they are hoping the signing of Truamine Johnson can provide that. Combined with Morris Claiborne resigning the Jets are set with their starters but could use a young developmental player to groom and eventually replace Claiborne.
Wide Receiver
Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse along the three rookies give the Jet some quality receivers they really lack a big receiver who can win jump balls and help move the chains. With an abundance of 6’3 or taller receivers in this draft they will have plenty of options to find their guy despite the signing of Terrelle Pryor.
