Scouting Report
Charlie Kolar Scouting Report
6’6, 255 (EST) … 2022 Senior Bowl invite … totaled 62 catches for 756 yards and six touchdowns in 2021; finished career at Iowa State with 168 catches for 2,181 yards and 23 touchdowns … John Mackey Award Finalist (nation’s top tight end) in 2020 and 2021 … 2021 Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year … led all Big-12 tight ends in catches, yards, and touchdowns … his 2021 season set Iowa State tight end receiving records in every category … three-star recruit with a high school basketball background … physically, Charlie Kolar possess top-shelf length for a pass-catcher at the position; lacks a well-developed frame, however, and despite being north of 250 pounds, could use a bit more muscle/bulk up … athletically, Kolar isn’t a twitchy player; he lumbers down the field and into his route; not very flexible, he needs to gear down before changing directions … has good hand-eye coordination and his upper and lower halfs tend to work in concert … as a receiver, Kolar profiles as a short-to-intermediate and red zone target; his big body and large catch radius will help him succeed as a pass-catcher despite his struggles as a route-runner; he won’t be able to shake free from NFL defenders but in a jump-ball or contested catch situation, he should do fine; his basketball background is evident in those circumstances… in the run game, Kolar is a willing blocker whose large frame helps him shield would-be tacklers; he has a want-to approach to run blocking which will give him a chance to play with his hand in the dirt … Kolar is a very smart guy; should have little trouble picking up an NFL playbook and understanding the nuances of getting open in the pros … overall, Kolar profiles as a depth or rotational tight end in the NFL whose athletic limitations will cap his ceiling as a red-zone specialist and chain-mover. He’ll need to prove early in his career that he can overcome his lack of twitch as a receiver in order to have a chance to develop into a starter at some point down the road … his size, contested-catch ability, and overall intelligence will make him an asset on an NFL roster even if it isn’t as an every-down player.
