Scouting Report

Garrett Wilson Scouting Report

6’0″, 183 (confirmed) … Garrett Wilson enjoyed a career-year in 2021 with 70 catches for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns in a loaded Ohio State offense; totaled 143 catches for 2,213 yards and 23 touchdowns during his Buckeyes’ career … Second-Team All-American in 2021 … adds value as quality special teams player; Garrett Wilson is an experienced and productive punt returner … Wilson was a five-star prospect out of high school and rated a top-15 recruit nationally regardless of position; he scored 32 total touchdowns during his junior season … Wilson was a dual-sport star in high school who received Division I scholarship offers in basketball … Physically, Garrett Wilson has adequate height and length but is on the leaner side of the wide receiver spectrum; he’ll need to add a few pounds to his frame to maximize his ability to win versus physical NFL cornerbacks … Athletically, Wilson tested like a top-shelf athlete at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine but his play-speed doesn’t always match those numbers … he’s a shifty and flexible open-field athlete who has plenty of top-end speed to make field-flipping plays, but he’s the kind of long-range runner who needs to build momentum to reach top speed … an extremely loose and fluid open-field player who excels at making defenders miss in space and picking up extra critical yards … As a route-runner, Wilson runs his stem with effective and efficient steps and can snap into his breaks as you’d expect from a player with loose hips and ankles; he has little trouble sinking his hips while maintaining full speed … Wilson creates good separation from defenders at the top of his route and is routinely open for an easy target; he’s also a gifted catcher of the football who can snag passes away from his frame … Wilson has top-tier body control and tracking ability and despite his smaller frame, he can win in contested situations downfield … Garrett Wilson plays with a competitive toughness that’s evident when he has the ball in his hands; he wants to gain every yard he can … Overall, Wilson has received more fanfare than his Ohio State counterpart Chris Olave, but his game lacks the kind of effortless style that Olave possesses … Wilson, while effective in intermediate routes, doesn’t have the kind of elite twitch that usually translates to high-end NFL success … Still, Wilson is a fantastic playmaker who should have little trouble establishing himself as a critical target in an NFL passing game, but I’d be careful before suggesting he’s the same kind of elite prospect that we’ve seen enter the NFL at the position in recent years … Wilson profiles as a top-notch WR2 who can star in a complementary role opposite an established pro.
