Scouting Report

George Karlaftis Scouting Report

6’4, 275 (EST) … finished 2021 season with 39 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and 35 QB hurries — named first-team AlL-Big 10; limited to just three games in 2020 due to injuries (lower leg) and COVID-19 … for his career, Karlaftis totaled 97 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, and 14 sacks … was a four-star recruit out of high school; born in Athens, Greece (lived there until he was 13) and was a high school track and field standout in Indiana … won’t turn 21 until three weeks before the 2022 NFL Draft … Physically, Karlaftis possesses a well-defined 275-pound frame that will offer teams scheme diversity; he’ll be a good fit as a hand-in-the-dirt defensive end in a 4-3 and as a stand-up outside linebacker in a 3-4 … arm length will a concern until there’s an official measurement at the 2022 NFL scouting combine … Athletically, Karlaftis is a fantastic straight-line player whose burst off the snap is incredible; he packs a powerful jolt on contact and bullies opposing linemen into the backfield; he has top-shelf strength and his hands uncoil with violent intentions; there’s no quit in Karlaftis’ game — he plays through and beyond the whistle with a motor that’s always running hot … As a pass-rusher, Karlaftis has a rare ‘want to’ when it comes to getting into the backfield; he’s always working, whether it’s with an impressive and nuanced set of pass rush moves or feet that keep driving through blockers while bull rushing … he isn’t the most flexible edge rusher, so there may be some limitations when he tries to bend the edge against NFL offensive tackles, but it shouldn’t hinder his ability to be a high-impact pass-rusher on the next level; his combination of smarts, strength, and quickness/burst will be his calling card … Against the run, George Karlaftis has the requisite power to set the edge and is a sure tackler when in position to make a play; his motor keeps him actively involved in plays run away from him, and his straight-line burst makes him an asset down the line of scrimmage and in pursuit of ball-carriers; his first-step quickness is a huge asset in being a penetrator and disruptor — he doesn’t always finish when he’s in position for a TFL, but the trash he creates is almost as valuable … Overall, Karlaftis is one of the best defensive prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft who will instantly earn a starting role because of his effort and ability to be a quality player on all three downs; Players like Karlaftis tend to separate from their draft-class contemporaries because of the ‘want to’ that he displays on the field — effort like his minimizes his bust risk and will make him a bonafide 10-year, high-level starter in the NFL.
