Scouting Report
Phidarian Mathis Scouting Report
6’4, 312 (EST) … 2022 Senior Bowl invite … finished 2021 with 53 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and nine sacks — was a permanent team captain last season; totaled 129 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks at Alabama … a four-star recruit and one of the top high school defensive linemen in the nation … Physically, Phidarian Mathis is a top-heavy and long 300-pounder whose thin lower-half will create some concern, but he’s a very strong guy at the point of attack who has a good understanding of leverage; he bench presses offensive linemen away from his frame with relative ease; very good length for an interior defender … Athletically, Mathis moves with urgency and is quick and effective off the snap; he’s surprisingly twithcy and while he does have to gear down to change direction, his size/frame helps him cover ground when plays re-direct in front of him … As a pass rusher, Phidarian Mathis presents as a pocket collapser who has enough of a pass-rush arsenal to work himself free from blockers and strike opposing quarterbacks; his motor runs hot and when you combine that with his power and movement skills, good things usually happen … Against the run, Phidarian Mathis is strong enough to set the edge if asked to play 5-tech and is quick enough to disrupt with interior pressure if kicked inside; he maintains gap integrity and is a true trashman — he clogs running lanes and makes the running back’s job a nightmare … Overall, Mathis reminds me of Chicago Bears defensive lineman, Akiem Hicks … his energy and dual skill-set as a pass-rusher and run defender will make him a candidate to start very early in his career; at worst, he’ll be key contributor to a rotation while he works his way into a full-time gig … there’s legitimate first-round potential with Mathis; he’ll be a riser throughout draft season.
