Scouting Report

Tyreke Smith Scouting Report

6’4, 265 (EST) … 2022 Senior Bowl invite … totaled 26 tackles, five tackles for loss, and three sacks in 2021; finished career at Ohio State with 55 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and seven sacks … a consensus four-star recruit out of high school and one of the nation’s top prospects (a top-50 recruit) … has high school basketball background … Physically, Tyreke Smith has the length and mass desired from edge defenders on the next level; his body-type gives him versatility as either a hand-in-the dirt 4-3 defensive end or stand-up 3-4 outside linebacker; average strength at the point of attack but his history of injuries likely contributed to some stunted development in the weight room too … Athletically, Smith moves well for a guy nearly 270 pounds; he doesn’t labor to get upfield and his feet move at an adequate pace; Ohio State trusted him enough to drop into coverage at times, which is an indication in how they view him as an athlete; lateral movement skills are good enough to challenge offensive tackles in his pass rush and to hang against skill players in space … As a pass-rusher, Tyreke Smith lacks top-shelf production but he was an active disrupter of timing and pocket integrity; he has the baseline traits of a quality pass-rusher in the NFL with active and agressive hands — he’s consistently working through the rep; not the most polished pass-rusher from a technique standpoint, but he’s constantly moving forward and exhibiting the necessary effort to feel confident that with more refinement, he can be a legitimate player on passing downs … Against the run, Tyreke Smith is an inconsistent player who gets sucked inside far too often; he was routinely subbed out in obvious running situations which indicates Ohio State felt better options existed on the roster; his length and stride assist him when he’s in pursuit and he’s generally strong enough to hold his ground when run at, but he’ll need to improve his read/react timing and stay disciplined in his assignment to be a reliable run defender on the next level … Overall, Tyreke Smith is another height-weight-speed guy with good pedigree who NFL teams will value as a player with a higher upside than his film suggests; the pre-draft process will likely dictate his final grade, which on film alone is somewhere in the early portion of Day 3; if he tests well and confirms that he’s a traits guy, he can rise even higher than that and ultimately develop into a key contributor on a defensive front.
