Porter Gustin

Porter Gustin | Trojan Pass Rusher

August 25, 2018

After to straight 5.5 sack seasons, it was a disappointing 2017 for Porter Gustin who limped through the season only playing four games after a knee injury sidelined him. Now back and reportedly 100% healthy the Trojans and Gustin are hoping he can get back on track and build off of the success early in his career. With Gustin entering his fourth season with the Trojans it’s a perfect time to look at his traits and how that could translate to the NFL.

What Porter Gustin Does Well

Porter Gustin wins with straight line quickness and strength. Against the run he’s able to play with good leverage and hand strength to take on blockers and set a hard edge forcing runners back to the middle. From there he has enough lateral burst to get off blocks and then attack the run. As a pass rusher Gustin can time his get off and has enough quickness to win the edge from time to time but he relies on his strength to not get pushed past the pocket as he turns the corner. But his best pass rushing move is a grab and pull move that combines all of his positive traits.

Concerns about Porter Gustin

While Gustin can have success rushing the passer and stopping the run, he lacks the bend and agility needed to be considered an elite pass rusher. Lacking that fluidity and agility Gustin can struggle to change directions quickly and can even get knocked down when trying to do so while engaged. Lacking bend and good ankle flexibility make it difficult to bend around offensive tackles and consistently win around the edge.

Porter Gustin has a lot of tools that can allow him to have a successful career. His ability to win with strength along with good enough athletic traits means that he can find a role within a NFL defense. Gustin’s best fit in the NFL is going to be as a linebacker that lines up on the strong side over the tight end. Whether it’s in a 3-4 defense or even a 4-3 that has their strongside linebacker line up on the edge, his ability to set the edge in the run game and provide enough pass rushing help will attrack NFL teams. Gustin also looks as if he could play some off the ball linebacker and contribute on special teams which only enhances his appeal.
