We all knew the Jacksonville Jaguars had a lot of money to spend in NFL free agency, but I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted that the Jaguars’ free-agent signings would turn out quite the way they have.
Let’s start with the good: Brandon Scherff. The Jaguars signed the perennial Pro Bowl offensive guard as one of the first big moves in Monday’s flurry of activity. Scherff was one of the most significant players on the free-agent market this year and will be a huge asset to quarterback Trevor Lawrence as he embarks on his second season in the NFL.
But then… things get weird.
Christian Kirk at $18 million per season? A $10 million fully-guaranteed one-year deal for Evan Engram? A three-year, $30 million contract for Zay Jones? Their other signings include defensive players like DT Foley Fatusaki and LB Foye Oluokun.
That’s a lot of money for a lot of questionable players — sans Scherff — in the first year of coach Doug Pederson’s tenure in Jacksonville.
