Shea Patterson | Next Baker Mayfield?

Every year we look to find the next someone, whether that person is a star player, mid round gem or in this case the number one pick in the NFL Draft. After a tremendous season that saw Baker Mayfield leading Oklahoma to the College Football playoff and showcase elite skills, Mayfield was the number one pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns. With this success people are already starting to find the next Baker Mayfield and if there is anyone that reminds me of him, it’s Shea Patterson.

As most Draftniks start diving into 2019 tape we’ve already seen some players get the Mayfield comparison with Penn State’s Trace McSorely being the one that gets the most attention. While McSorely is smaller in stature and has put up gaudy stats and help rise Penn State into playoff contention, his lack of good accuracy should eliminate him from any Mayfield comps.

Who Could be the Next Baker Mayfield?

When watching Shea Patterson the first thing that came to my mind was that his skill set is so similair’s to Mayfield’s. Most think of Mayfield’s mobility and improve skills, but his best trait (and reason why he was the first overall pick) is his ball placement and accuracy. Patterson doesn’t have elite arm strength (like Mayfield) but he does show the ability to throw with touch and anticipation on short to intermediate throws while also dropping the ball into receivers down the field.

Patterson also has some characteristics that Mayfield doesn’t which could either be viewed as good and/or bad. Decision making and not forcing the ball into throws is one area that Patterson seems to be better at. But Mainly Patterson seems even keeled as he plays and not the over competitive sometimes out of control nature that Mayfield played in. Sure being ultra competitive helped drive Mayfield on and off the field, but it also put him into bad light and into too much of the national conversation.

Keep an eye out for Patterson who was the number one quarterback in his recruiting class who had success at Ole Miss right away and now is at Michigan learning under Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh finally gets a true talent at quarterback and his tutoring of Patterson could really help take his game to the next level, not to mention playing in a pro style offense. He is a must watch this 2018 college football season.
