Trevor Lawrence on entering 2021 NFL Draft: ‘We’ll just have to see how things unfold’

October 28, 2020

Clemson quarterback and presumed No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Trevor Lawrence, sent shockwaves through the draft community and the city of New York on Tuesday when he failed to commit to entering April’s draft.

Lawrence, who’s long said the 2020 college season would be his last, could be second-guessing that strategy with the lowly Jets currently on pace to secure the rights to the top pick.

Here’s what Lawrence said on Tuesday:

Regardless of the current state of affairs with the Jets, the chance for Lawrence to play in New York will end up being too great to pass up. It’s likely Adam Gase will be fired by (or before) the end of the season and as is the case with any team that ends up with the first overall pick, a rebuild will be coming to Gang Green. Who better to lead that process than Lawrence, who’s considered the best quarterback prospect to enter the NFL since Andrew Luck.

Look, drama is fun. It provides some great talking points and debate fodder between now and the time that underclassmen have to declare for the draft. Kudos to Lawrence for building a little suspense.

But by the time draft weekend rolls around, Lawrence’s name will be written in pen for whoever ends up with the first overall pick.
