Urban Meyer doesn’t commit to Trevor Lawrence as Jaguars’ pick at No. 1 overall

Urban Meyer Jacksonville Jaguars

Newly minted Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer is (and will remain) the biggest coaching hire of the 2021 offseason. After a decorated career as a college coach that included three national championships, Meyer is making the leap to the NFL ranks armed with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Put another way, Meyer will be gifted Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Or will he?

Meyer was asked about the Jaguars pick at his introductory press conference and failed to commit to Lawrence as the guy. Instead, he offered praise to three expected first-round passers: Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Zach Wilson.

Come on, coach. We appreciate the effort to create some drama or even drum up some potential trade offers from teams picking in the top five, but this is ludicrous.

The Jaguars are going to draft Lawrence. The New York Jets are on the clock at No. 2 overall. There’s no drama. There’s no intrigue. This year’s first overall pick is one of the biggest locks in the history of the NFL Draft.
